Breedom Public Sewing House

Southeast Portland has a new workspace for learning and making: Breedom Public Sewing House. Owner Bree Perry has been hard at work transforming the floor above one of my favorite shops, Mag-Big, into a bright, spacious and inviting location for sewing and any other number of crafts. Breedom opened last week and has a calendar jam-packed with classes and workshops, many taught by well-known locals, as well as machine and space rental options and one-on-one sewing lessons.

I met Bree a few months ago on the Alley 33 committee and she is amazing! I’m such a hesitant sewer, but Bree’s attitude (“Don’t let a lack of training be confused with a lack of talent”) is exactly the kind of learning environment that gets me sitting in front of a machine.

Breedom Public Sewing House embodies so many of the things that I love about Portland. Bree and Mag-Big are working closely together and have the same goal: support local production to create a resilient economy. Bree said, “Nearly all of our instructors have small businesses here in Portland (either apparel or craft) and Breedom is giving them one more outlet to share their love of creating with our city.” The ladies are hosting a Grand Opening Party and Artist Mixer on May 14th at 6pm at the shop. Stop by, have a drink and sign up for a class. Bree is even throwing in a free private lesson for each person who signs up for a class that night. See you there!
